I wo...I agree that the pope weilds a lot of power. I would argue though that all religions, except maybe Hinduism which is not actually a religion but more like a collection of local beliefs all tied into one, have power figures and people. Lavish ornamentation like that of the Vatican are common and are a sign of early peoples respect and adoration of both their god and religious leaders.

I don't mind saying that I am a Christian, I also do not believe that God is male or female as God is not a person at all. I go to church but not becuase God makes me or becuase I feel guilty, I go as I am called to fellowship with other believers and to learn more, be challenged about faith and issues of justice near and far.

I guess all of that is to say that I do not know that I would call the pope "holiness" either but I think that is becuase I have no desire to address the pope at all. ALthough I do think it is important to note that the signet ring is historical and that popes do not have the life, they give a vow of poverty and before they get to live in Vatican City they usually live in a hole of a city somewhere taking care of those that society throws aside. They do good in the world.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00077665510869484104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17542110.post-91155078887537787422007-06-13T15:55:00.001-05:002007-06-13T15:55:00.001-05:00Yoda:I thought so!Yoda:
I thought so!Jenny!https://www.blogger.com/profile/02894594994831955679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17542110.post-32998219143562894132007-06-13T15:55:00.000-05:002007-06-13T15:55:00.000-05:00Snow:Thats a fair assessment, but I truly find fla...Snow:
Thats a fair assessment, but I truly find flaws in that..the other symbols are all objects, not human. I'm like you, Jenny, I have a personal relationship with God and I don't feel the need to act the part of a good religious girl or go to church to demonstrate the love I have for him. He knows. I know. I live my life in an ethical manner the majority of the time and I try to be respectful and kind to people. I screw up, I realize my mistakes and learn from them, he forgives, we move on. That's good enough for me. I respect the Catholic's respect for the pope, but that is a symbolic part of their religion just as the Torah, or the pentagram is a symbolic part of other religions. He just doesn't hold "meaning" to me the way he would had I been raised Catholic.

--snowsnowelfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06774922203013114354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17542110.post-6724682606108852522007-06-13T14:18:00.000-05:002007-06-13T14:18:00.000-05:00I was raised catholic and I realize that he's just...I was raised catholic and I realize that he's just a man like everyone else.

I'll kiss his ring when he kisses my ass.nonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07550167783969561280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17542110.post-67037190024783435232007-06-13T14:11:00.000-05:002007-06-13T14:11:00.000-05:00Raffi:So if you were to meet George you would addr...Raffi:
So if you were to meet George you would address him as Mr. President and hold your tongue???
