Throw Down!

I read this Article and this Article and it pissed me off beyond belief, not the article, the situation. I am glad that finally some schools are doing something to control ignorance at graduations.

I experienced this 1st hand at both of my sisters 8th grade graduations. I live in a very diverse community so you can find just about every possible race imaginable around our area. I am not a racist, but sure, I have prejudices just like everyone else (don't lie and say you don't). At both graduations, during the roll call of graduates, there was obnoxious outbursts, whooping, hooting and hollering when a certain child's name was said. Now, before they begin announcing the graduates, the announcer tells you specifically to hold your applause to the end so that EVERY name can be heard! I find it so fucking ignorant to not only show complete disrespect to other graduates and their families by whooping loudly so that others names can't be heard, but to not even listen to the speakers directions. How fucking obnoxious! I was so angry during both of my sisters graduations and it kind of ruined a very special moment.

This one school "made students and parents sign a contract promising they would remain silent or the students wouldn't receive their diplomas." Seriously, you should NEVER have to sign a contract spelling that out and the fact that this has been established is a pathetic show of the ignorance in our society. I am pissed off at the fact that people are saying that, "it is more about race than etiquette." Shut the fuck up and put your race card back in your fucking pocket! You cannot eliminate the fact that the primary race that is this obnoxious at graduations is black! This statement is a generalization and of course other races participate in this ignorant behavior, but you cannot hide the fact of majority rules.

So all of a sudden it is racist to think that you should be respectful at a graduation!

Give me a fucking break! Graduation is an emotional event for families, but you can shoot off guns and whoop and celebrate at home when it doesn't drown out the names of other graduates. It is important that every graduates name be heard and that obnoxious cunt families don't disrespect that! The only reason this is becoming a racial issues is because some races need to make everything into a racial issue, maybe if they hung up the race baiter bullshit for once we could end all this entitlement crap and finally move the fuck on!

I don't think that the students should be punished because they are in a family full of ignorant disrespectful dick hole cunt rags - but really, what other solution is there? I don't care if you all think I am a racist bitch, this shit is just fucked up!

Leave race out of it and be respectful at graduations - it's that simple! FUCK!

I agree that it would be nice if everyone at graduation was polite and allowed for each name to be heard.

I guess I also think that students having their diplomas withheld becuase their families made noise is a little ridiculous.

Also, I have to admit I hate the idea of graduation. I walked in HS because it was required, skipped the graduation for my AA skipped the graduation for my BA and only went ot the graduation for my MA becuase my family made threats. I will probably not walk for my PhD either, its just so much pomp and not enough about the graduates accomplishments. Maybe that is part of the problem!

It's not fair to the student! Instead of not letting the students get teh diploma after the contract has been signed, then maybe they should be fined heavily instead!

It was not just noise...it was like bull horn kind of noise! Some families the year before couldn't even see their son/daughter walk across stage b/c of the commontion caused by certain families!

That is just rude, not matter what color your skin is! I would be pissed off if this was a bunch of crackers doing this too!

Graduation ceremonies are a waste of time and money. I say if you can't follow the rules and just shut the fuck up so everyone can get out quicker, then just cancel it. Everyone still still gets their diploma (all who earned it) and no one has to waste their time over some bullshit formality. I hate graduations and we should use the stubborness and ignorance of this "racist" issue as a reason to stop graduations. A big thanks goes out to all my niggas for keepin it real. Now I never have to suffer through a graduation ceremony again.

How do you really feel about them? ;)

I think the biggest travesty is that the students (whom no one wants to get hurt) are the ones who are actually insinuating racism. From one of the articles:

"Nadia Trent, one of the students, feels aggrieved because all five students were "of color." She says white students who evoked cheers got their diplomas."

Why is it that she sees that the students are of color and NOT that each of them had people make a ruckus when their names were called out? Here lies the crux of the entire issue. If all people can see is their own skin color, then how can they ever see past it?

Well, I tried to post it here but Blogger gave me an error that made my head scream, so I am just posting the URL and hope it goes through:

My dad is the whitest white man ever and he totally does not know how to act at graduations, either. He yells and hoots and it is MORTIFYING. I know that he'll probably come out for seminary graduations, but OMG! It's in a church. Maybe I can tell him I won't get my diploma if he yells.

I just attended two HS graduations last week. At one it was pretty peaceful, but at the other it was rowdy. There was even someone with an air horn. The guy with the air horn was white ... there are inconsiderate pricks in all races.

And yes, I will admit to my predjudices, I'm not happy about them but most (if not all) of us have them.

I actually love ignorance! This was just false anger!

Sorry that your head was screaming!I can't get that to work, but I am pretty sure that I have seen that and it was really funny!

That would be pretty funny if you told him that! Parents are obnoxious and embarrassing even if they aren't making a scene!

Paul:
That white guy should be stoned! I know that it is not just one race who acts like that, however; the other races don't call racism at the drop of a hat. "Reverse Racism" is a real thing, but it is never taken seriously...not like the race card! People get scared when the race bomb gets dropped.

Respect diminishes more and more with each passing generation. My kids do and say things I would NEVER have done with my parents and they in turn would have said the same of thiers too. It's a sad state of affairs and media just perpetuates the concept. Look at reality TV? We are a society of rude obnoxious bullies!

it's simply disrespectful and shows no class when people at graduations carry on like a bunch of idiots... no matter what color or ethnicity.

that chris rock clip is f'ing hilarious.

Crikey, I've never heard of that sort of stuff at a Graduation before. The couple I've been too are very orderly affairs.

It sounds as if the families want to give their child the biggest cheer as if that somehow means they are the best family or it makes the graduate the most proud.

If my family had made a single noise out of place I would of died of embarrasment and stopped talking to them for a very long time until they were forgiven.

I've only been to one graduation and it was dead boring. But maybe they aren't as good here as they are in the US. But people being loud at inappropriate times is very annoying.

I'm with you Jenny.

FUCK!!!

People no longer know how to behave at what used to be considered solemn occasions. I'm not a huge fan of ritual formality but it has its place. I'm not sure we'll be able to get decorum back so easily - people are no longer "ashamed" of bad behaviour. Our celebrities run amok like idiots and people still pay them the big bucks. Sad.

I celebrate by farting tunes and letting off fireworks - would this be allowed at the end or during the graduation ceremony?

My graduation was very quite and demure.

I celebrate with a 21 gun salute.

I will be walking at my graduation in December, and I have no idea what to expect here. I can speak for my family will be normal and respectful to others, however.
And I am so totally going to cry. I know it sounds kinda self-centered, but this is probably the best thing I've ever done for myself (and my children) and I am so proud to have earned it. I know I would be crushed after all this hard work if someone held my diploma because my family members made a ruckus. That's just not fair.

And I think the only rule at my HS graduation was that we could NOT throw our hats.

Snowelf:
Congratulations! That is really exciting for you! At my HS graduation we couldn't thrwo our hats either, if we didn't return our cap and gown...we wouldn't get our diploma!

I think that most graduations are quiet and respectful...it's the occasional incidents that ruin it!

That is a very honorable way to celebrate!

Wouldn't it be nice if the race card was never (or never needed to be) played? What a wonderful world that would be.

Jenny! said...

Paul:
I wish the race card didn't exist! But it does, and it gets played, alot!

I agree--there was an African right-of-passage ritual where the males coming of age performed a certain dance or walk and everyone cheered and they are probably projecting that onto this.

But I'm a middle-aged WASP, and if I can't mix martini's and practice my putt with my new putter while wearing a kilt during the graduation, they shouldn't be able to flaunt their culture, either.
