Puffing Away That PG Rating

The Motion Picture Association of America on Thursday said portrayals of smoking would be considered alongside sex and violence in assessing the suitability of movies for young viewers. Films that appear to glamorize smoking will risk a more restrictive rating, and descriptions of tobacco use will be added to the increasingly detailed advisories that accompany each rated film. Under the new policy, a film’s rating will consider all tobacco use, rather than just teenage smoking, as in the past.

Do you think movies that contain smoking deserve a more restrictive rating?

I dont like smoking. I once 'knew' a girl who would smoke whilst performing oral sex. Most disconcerting.

I tend to think that the more forbidden you make something, the more interesting and enticing it is. At least to some.

I also think our society is becoming ridiculous in it's attempts to legislate good behaviour. We can't do anything any more without warnings plastered all over it. But I guess since the boogy-man god is longer watching everything we do, we need to be restrained in other ways.

Christ. I would avoid girls that smoke whilst giving head. Your knob could get lung cancer...

Thanks for your comment! I have a hard time being told what to do, and that just makes me more stubborn. I think that it is ridiculous how our lives are being rulled by what others see as (like you said) "good behaviour".

Not to mention the burns!

I don't believe in censoring random crap. Other than shit which could be considered as inflammatory as to be a problem to public safety.

That said, ratings are not censorship. They are a means to limit what young people watch.

The point of debate actually is: Are young people likely to be influenced by what they see on the big screen? Will a smoking action hero lead to more kids thinking of smoking as cool? If that's a yes, I would say the ratings change is a success. If someone wants to smoke that's their choice, but if someone took up smoking just because they thought it was cool and they'll have saved the planet, that's bad.

I've seen my uncle die at 45 'coz his heart just couldn't take it any more. It simply stopped beating. He was a chain smoker for 25 yrs and all the medical reports directly tied the ailment with smoking. It was something which could've been totally avoided.

yeah and before you know it, she'd be using your belly button as an ashtray, innit?

The question is moot! (I've always wanted to say that =:-)

Kids sneak into R-rated movies all the time anyway. This won't solve anything.

Sorry about your uncle, but kids will see this shit no matter what kind of rating restrictions we put in place. I would rather have my children exposed to the world as it is instead of keeping them in the ideal bubble that we are pushing now a days.

Totally agree, it is just a stupid waste of time and money!

What about eating fatty fast food? When should that be rated or banned in movies - or doing dangerous things like driving and not reducing carbon output. Future movies will be dull won't they.... (apart from my own output on the Anal XXX label)
